October Already?

First of all thanks to all parents who volunteered during the Terry Fox Walk and helped out during Pizza Lunch.  Also, thanks to both ML and Sara for helping to put together our class contact list.

It is hard to believe that the first month of school will be wrapping up. What we are focusing on next week is listed below.

Language

• Spelling
• continue Typing Skills
• Novel Study: The Breadwinner
• Creative Writing

Math

• Multiplication Flash Cards (students should be practicing at home)
• Number Patterns
• Patterns & Pattern Rules

Social Studies

• Vote on Student Council 
• Citizenship
• Freedoms, Rights & Responsibilities 

Math Test

We are going to have our Whole Numbers test on Tuesday, September 24th.  We will be looking at how to solve multi-step problems today and review questions will be assigned.

The following items will be covered on the test:

• Representing and Ordering Numbers (standard form, expanded form, number form, ordering,etc)
• Adding up to 4 digit numbers and 3 number addition
• Subtracting 4 digit numbers
• Multiplication and Division Facts up to 12s
• Multiplying 2 digit numbers
• Long Division
• Multi-step Problems

Review Questions that will help students prepare for the test are on pages 74-75 #1-16

Week Of September 16th

It is hard to believe that we have been at school for only two weeks now.  With the crazy changes in weather, it feels like we have already been at school for a couple of season changes.  Below is what we are going to be focusing on in class next week:

Language

• finish letter writing
• focus on the writing process ( plan/write/edit/revise)
• Spelling

Math

• Multiplication ( up to 12 times table)
• Division
• Starting 2 digit x 2 digit multiplication
• Long Division

Social Studies

• Citizenship in Canada
• Different Levels of Canadian Government

Treasure Chest

Last week students were given a handout for their Treasure Chest.  All students are to bring in their collections on Monday, September 23rd.   Presentations will be ongoing throughout the week and will be brought home on Friday, September 27th.

Curriculum Night

Curriculum night at LKS is on September 10th.  There is a school assembly and teacher introductions at 6:30 in the gym and then the Grade 5 parents will be heading to room 122 at 7:00.  Hope to see you there.
